Varmala Thari Giridhar Ne - I Will Wear The Marriage Garland Offered By My Real Husband Giridhar E-mail
Bhajan13

Addressing her worldly husband Ranaji, Mirabai says:

  1. Ranaji! (addressing her husband in name only) I will wear the marriage garland offered by my real Husband Giridhari, Krishna and thus we will freely roam about in this world.
  2. Listen O Rana! Listen O deluded One! We shall marry The Husband-Giridhar as our husband, why should we be ashamed of any one in so declaring and executing our desires?
  3. Ranaji! Who do I care for other than My Lord? And whose slavery am I going to do? (of course of no one).
  4. Ranaji! We should remove the dirty crow's intellect within us and  learn to enjoy the diamonds, sapphires and pearls in this world.
  5. Ranaji! Let us abandon the fineries of this world in the forms of beautiful clothes jewelry and perfumes. Let us adopt the necklace of flowers, natural beads of the Tulsi plant and a dot on the forehead offered by our Husband Krishna who is eternally chaste and loving.
  6. Ranaji! We should serve the lord Vishnu-Krishna and roam around wandering the world over in the company of the true saints (Krishna, Mahavir, Budha, Jesus, Kabir, Nanak, Ramakrishna, Mahatma Gandhi etc.)
  7. Ranaji! In performing every activity let us remember Lord Krishna and always move around in the company of the saints.
  8. Mira says that we should adopt and sing the virtues of our Lord-Husband Krishna, always engaging our mind in the service of His creation and remaining perfectly humble (as directed in His message of Gita).

Commentary:

1. In addressing not only her immediate relatives but the entire world, Mirabai is teaching us in short the entire substance of Gitaji because she was a living Gita and thus Krishna herself. If we must marry and give our valuable human life then it should be only for the purpose of Self-Realization. We must marry our own Atman-Krishna-our own Self, who is already eternally married to us whether one likes it or not. Our Real Self accepts nothing less than the Real, so we are being deluded to marry anybody else or the world, not to speak of heaven and all its entices. We can maintain our true freedom, joy, bliss and peace only if we offer this body and all its appurtenances to its creator who alone is its owner, Husband. All else is illusion - mirage and deception. No slave of the body can be happy no matter how we look at it. A prison of desires, however beautiful, is still a prison and shackles of gold are nevertheless shackles.

2. Once we realize Her life's love message, we must follow her as Shri Krishna orders Arjuna to follow His advice. We must shamelessly and openly announce our intentions of living a  pure life in God just as the worldly shamelessly announce with much fun fare their determination to enjoy the flesh of the body and not pay attention to its results. How deluded are we! How dull! How childish! How foolish! How inert! Let our desire be fulfilled by our true husband, Krishna. How can a two handed person satisfy our inner desires for true love? How can a beggar help another beggar (worldly)?  Let us reach for the ocean, not the sink holes.

3. O Rana! O Worldly wise Fools! Why should we be ashamed of any one no matter how powerful, famous, rich or beautiful he or she may be? Fearlessness is Krishna and fearless is Love for Krishna. Mira is the finest example of fearlessness, like Radhika. Why should such a lover be a slave anything or care for anything that would enslave the freedom of a Lover to Love her Beloved Krishna? Mira's love belongs to the Beloved Husband Krishna-Giridhari, and her eyes filled with such love can see her lover in every atom of this universe. Who could be more fearless than Mira, who though married into a Rajput conservative family, could announce that her real husband is Krishna and that she has given her all, including the body, mind and intellect to Him. None can come even close to her fire of Love.

4. A crow (samsari) has no discrimination: at one time its beak may be dipped in the rotten flesh of a dead animal and at another time in sweet milk without knowing the difference. Not so with the Lovers of Krishna who always keep their mouths full of his sweetness and can never think of touching any body's flesh or other entices. Why should we not enjoy the beauty, love and bliss of Krishna-Mira when they are showering it unlimited through her bhajans, which are  paralleled to Krishna's bhajan Shreemad Bhagwad Gita? Let us therefore, love for the sake of love which knows no rewards, for love itself is its own reward. Ours is to love, for love will not only sustain us like Mira and Radhika, but it will engulf us at last into eternity. Love incarnate Krishna, the abode of Brahm-Nirvanam.

5. The apparent net of deception, the physical beauty, fineries and arts that delude everyone in this world have no place in our true love for our Beloved Krishna's Gita. Yet everything is tainted by this pure love if we have divine eyes to see and enjoy, not as the worldly enjoy the objects of their passions, but as Mira enjoys her Beloved. Mira and Radha being two sides of one coin. MiRadhaji enjoys their combined love for our beloved Krishna the creator, sustainer and above all, eternal lover of all mankind nay the entire creation, which is His/Her body. This love can only be realized and enjoyed through renunciation of the perishables and attachment for the imperishable. Once blessed by Gita-Krishna, Mira-Radha, we have no fear of this world that exhibits its illusion every moment.

6. How do we feel Mira's love in our heart? It is as simple as breathing or seeing or eating our choice food. It is available to all of us all the time only if we really want it and are willing to pay the price in terms of total surrender. There is no other way. We love everything as our own self as manifestations of our Lord, our Lover, our Mother Mira the Beloved consort of the Beloved Krishna. They are our parents and we are all their children. Shall we have divine wisdom to see and feel this? It can be possible only by the grace of other lovers of Krishna, Gita, Mira or Radha and not by the makeshift shopkeepers in the form of so called today's dharma gurus. Stay away from them as far as possible and find the true lovers of God who are sent by Shree Krishna Himself. They are rare indeed, but we can constantly study, digest and practice Gita and feel that Supreme Love of Mira who was herself living Gita-Eternal Love in the form of our Mother, Sister, Daughter or our Beloved.  She is herself our supreme lover-guru-God and all that we cherish, desire or wish to become.

7. So we remember Mira, the Divine Mother, and feel her presence in all our activities, thoughts, intellect and feelings. Not a single moment must pass without her name on our lips and her image in our heart. She will purify us, for how can the sun give out anything but light and energy? Can darkness stand its sight? Can confusion, fear, shame, insensitivity stand in the life so rich as Hers and in our life that is soaked by Her grace and blessings? We, her little children, can imitate our Mother who wishes for us to enjoy all she has blessed us with, the sum total being Supreme Love that only lovers of God know. What can crow, like the worldly, know of the pure love that knows no body or object. Let us therefore marry her husband Krishna, who nevertheless is eternally married to all of us as Atman and therefore we are all particle of MiRadhaji, who is but another form of Krishna.

8. Her blessings to us is her greatest love of surrender to Krishna. Only a Dasi can please her Owner and only a true Lover can please her Beloved, whose eyes can never find beauty except in Krishna, the Pure Lover. This is possible through renunciation and constantly singing His Glory, constantly practicing Gita and faithfully and diligently responding to her Love. When we cannot distinguish between Krishna and MiRadhaji we have experienced that True Love which unites like rivers with their source, the Ocean.

We must then develop all the satvika virtues since we are never allowed to sin. Once we have acquired this fire of Love, it will consume us like an ocean absorbing all the waters entering into it. Let us be humble. How blind are we! With Mira's eyes we will not be deceived. She will remain an eternal image of Love for all mankind yet to come only if we are pure and able to feel in our heart her gentle admonitions to renounce all to receive all that is worthy to receive: that Eternal Love.

“A son’s obeisance to his parents is undoubtedly a form of prayer. What homage, then, must we pay to Him who is the Eternal Father of us all? Prayer may not be interpreted here in a narrow sense.” – M.K. Gandhi
