as interviewed by Dilip Roy
Dilip: How do you like Mira's Bhajans?
M. Gandhi: Mira's Bhajans! How can they be not beautiful? I am very familiar with many bhajans of Mirabai. In my Sabarmati Ashram these bhajans are sung repeatedly and with love and devotion to Her. Such rare joy is experienced from the her bhajans.
Dilip: Where do you see the "specialty or superiority" in Mira's bhajans?
M. Gandhi: Where? In her freedom from artificiality. Where else? In
Mira's words there is not an iota of artificiality. Mira has sung her
songs because she could not remain quiet without singing. Her songs
sprouted from the strength of her heart, like a natural fountain. It
was certainly not her intention or desire to gain name and fame or
praise from the worldly people, as we see nowadays quite often in the
songs of charans and charanis singing to please their hosts for money
(just like dharma gurus preaching for money and name and fame). This is
Mira's appeal, which will never be stale.
