“(The demonic know not) what to do and what to refrain from. . .” – Gita 16:7

People with Asuri and Rajsik propensities fail to distinguish between the real from the unreal or good from bad. They often engage in unnecessary activities and fail to perform their real duties.

It is a form of slavery when we have to depend on anyone except God. Dependency on others arises from our unfulfilled and selfish desires. We must think about this issue and try to be independent. There are several ways to achieve this. However, as we live in this material world, it is not always easy to escape consequences from forces beyond our control like climate changes, earthquakes, storms, draughts, diseases, etc. We must learn to bear this type of onslaught with faith and courage. Brave is the one who keeps his balance even during such unexpected circumstances.

First of all we must be faithful and honest to ourselves to overcome the dependency of the material world as much as humanly possible. Old habits do surface again and again until they overtake us with anxiety, depression and despondency. Next, we can help others only if we serve them selflessly. We certainly do not want others to be under our obligation directly or indirectly. Expectation of a reward would undoubtedly result in despair (Gita 3:9-13).

Anyone who practices Gitaji cannot afford to expect rewards for acting selflessly, be it with a trade or a business, between husband and wife or among relatives and friends. It is absolutely necessary to practice spiritual laws repeatedly and sincerely, and to discharge all duties as the Lord wants us to. And this is not limited to a specific few. It can be achieved by any and everyone.

Anyone on the path of spirituality (Gita 2:7) will never be without a direction, for he will be always inspired by his inner voice. It will be loud and clear all the time. Unconditional surrender to God means to be accepted as His Gopi. One then serves Him without hesitation, cheerfully performs his worldly duties, and gives up his ego, greed and selfishness. Under His protection, no one will be able to harm you under any circumstances. Thus, routine, worldly dealings are nothing but a bondage and unconditional service to Him is really a true freedom and eternal joy. Our desire for freedom becomes evident when we get rid of our laziness, excessive sleep and carelessness.
