Despicable, trivial, childlike behavior is not
appropriate for a seeker of truth like Arjuna. All of us must strive to get rid
of our sorrows and bring bliss to our lives. In this world, we constantly
struggle physically and mentally to please others. Even though worldly pleasures
are short-lived, we lose our happiness in the process because all our
efforts are seldom without any expectations. It is not uncommon for people to
ignore their own good and to go out of their way to please others. We often race to external objects and activities like concerts,
lectures, films, etc. for fun and
happiness. In this dark age of Kaliyuga, such desires are very
strong in almost everyone. However, if you keep looking outside for happiness,
you will not find anything but emptiness in your heart. Instead, make an attempt
to look inside your own heart for happiness.
With the help of a sat guru or by learning and
practicing the Gita, we can awaken our own real happiness (sat-chit-ananda) in our
heart. Don't run outside looking for it. The Atma itself is a supreme bliss within
us.
We can reward ourselves in many ways: go for a
walk, listen to music, cook for yourself or even clean your house. Do
anything that makes you happy. Celebrate memorable events in your life. Learn
to enjoy boundless beauties from your surroundings, like that of a flower,
butterfly, sunset or a sunrise.
Don't run around for happiness. It is right where you are. You can't help
others if you are not happy yourself. So listen to your inner voice and find inspiration (Gita 6:56).
Whatever works or responsibilities come your way, fulfill them. Even charity and
social work will not make you happy if they are done to elevate your ego and earn
some prestige. Real happiness begins at home, i.e. in your own heart and mind.
